Leather in Argentina:
Since the beginning of the XVII century the first leather exports where possible from the Port of Buenos Aires. There was plenty of wild cattle that was hunted from the Pampa´s prairies. Leather and fat kept on being the main cattle products for a long time. Meat was only a byproduct.
The increasing commerce of these products contributed to the economic development and wealth of the Pampa´s region.
During the Spanish colony and the first decades after the May Revolution, the country economy leant in the salted and dried meat and leather. In those times, leather offered different applications in ordinary life. This was because many other basic materials were imported.
Today, fresh leather is the main byproduct of the abattoirs industry and also the main input of the important argentine tanneries. Tanneries have achieved a worldwide well known level of quality
